Tell Me Your Wish (Genie) (song)

Tell Me Your Wish (Genie)"[1][2] (Hangul: "소원을 말해봐 (지니)") is a dance-pop song from the second mini-album of the same title by South Korean girl group Girls' Generation. Released digitally on June 22, 2009, the song became the 6th hit for the group, topping various off- and online charts. According to notable popular music critic Han Dong-Yoon (Hangul: 한동윤) of IZM, and an interview with Girls' Generation, the song is a electropop in Eurodance style, lacking the "hook" characteristics of previous single "Gee", getting a heavy synthesizer intro.\

Personnel

"Tell Me Your Wish" was composed by Dsign Music (Anne Judith Wik, Robin Jenssen, Ronny Svendsen, Nermin Harambasic) and Fridolin Nordso. The song was originally titled "I Just Wanna Dance". After SM Entertainment had purchased the rights to the song the lyrical story of the song was re-written with additional composition by Yoo Young-Jin and the song arranged by Yoo Han-jin.[5]

History

After the success of "Gee", the group had a short hiatus. In late June, SM Entertainment announced that Girls' Generation would be back with a new single and showing a "Marine Girl" concept; "Sowoneul Malhaebwa" was then released digitally on June 22, 2009.[6][7] The group's first performance was on June 26 on KBS's Music Bank.[8] Within a few days, the song topped 10 different digital music charts.[9] The group then also topped album and ringtone charts.[10]

Music video

The teaser video was released at 9:20 p.m. (KT) in June 19, 2009.[citation needed]
Later, the original video was released on June 26, 2009. In the music video, Yoona appears first sitting in a large lamp, the other members then appear sitting around her. The music video cuts back and forth between the group performing the choreography and scenes from three separate rooms occupied by three different members each. Yoona, Yuri and Jessica are in a large pink bedroom, Tiffany, Taeyeon and Sunny are in what looks like a dance club or disco bar, while Seohyun, Sooyoung and Hyoyeon are in a room in which there is a large cake from which Seohyun pops out. On one stage, the girls are wearing white uniforms and are performing on a long runway-like stage with a large heart in the background, while on the other they are in khaki uniforms with the words "GIRLS' GENIE" in the background. The music video frequently shows the girls interacting with the camera and with arms that sometimes extend from either side of the screen to give the impression that the girls a interacting with the viewer personally. The stage sequences have heavy, flashy lights and moving spotlights to give a strong and bright effect. [11]

Live performance style

On stage, the girls were given a "military" concept for their performance of "Tell Me Your Wish", dressing mostly in tight military jackets, miniskirts, and/or hot pants. The colours seen most often were white, khaki, brown, and red,[4][12][13][14][15] although a large variety of different uniforms were shown.
The group wished to show a mature image, in comparison to the innocence of "Gee". The choreography of the song, done by Rino Nakasone, was focused on synchronization and seductive images. Parts of the choreography became popular with Koreans, including the "Jegi-kicking dance" (Korean: 제기차기 춤) and the "Leg-beauty dance" (Korean: 각선미 춤).[4][16][17][18][19][20]

Other versions and plagiarism Issues

Issues of plagiarism were caused by Uzbek singer Dineyra's song "Raqsga Tushgin". It was revealed that although the release of her song preceded the release of Girls' Generation's second mini-album, the Uzbekistan singer's song was recorded without obtaining proper permission from Universal Music, thus plagiarising "소원을 말해봐 (Genie)/Tell Me Your Wish (Genie)".[21][22][23]
On May 19, 2010 Dutch singer Nathalie Makoma released her second single named "I Just Wanna Dance",[24] which is a licensed version of Girls' Generation's "Genie". Nathalie sings the original English lyrics that were written for the song.

"Genie" is the official title for the debut Japanese single of Girls' Generation. The single was released on September 8, 2010. A new version of the music video was filmed to accompany its release. On August 19, 2010, the teaser was released.[25] The music video was set to be release in 3D. On August 26, 2010, the full music video was released.[26] The song reached #5 on Oricon Charts in the same day of its release. A dance version of the video is also released.

Music Video

The music video begins with a young guy who finds an old lamp and a scale model of a circus inside an old attic. After rubbing the lamp, the camera zooms inside the tent where the Girls' Generation can be seen coming to life as the song begins to play. The girls then alternately switch costumes as the boy rubs the lamp once again, wherein they are seen inside an old television with inflated candy canes and colorful balloons. The music video ends with the guy rubbing the lamp again before magically disappearing into another scene where he is seen walking out of a limousine to meet up with Girls' Generation members at the red carpet. It appears that his wish had been granted.
Most of the choreography remains the same as the Korean version, with a slight tweak to some of the steps (but nonetheless still the same). The difference is that in the Japanese version is the part where Taeyeon stands out and sing her solo before going back and rejoining the other girls to form a line. While in the Korean version, Taeyeon does not stand out at all.
Also, all the girls pose with a hand salute at the end of the song wherein in the Korean version, only Seohyun and Jessica do it as their "end pose".

History

It was released in three editions, two CD+DVD editions (first press and regular), and a CD Only edition. First press CD+DVD edition includes a special photobook and a random (1 of 9) photocard. The single includes three versions of their Korean hit song, "Tell Me Your Wish(Genie)".
